Abstract

The tensile strength of a dielectric material consisting essentially of asbestos, and which may contain a minor proportion of a colloidal clay, such as bentonite, is increased by impregnating the material with an aqueous solution of a chloride of an alkaline earth metal or of zinc, aluminium or tin, drying the impregnated material and exposing it to the action of an alkaline solution comprising ammonia or an amine to convert the chloride to hydroxide in the body of the dielectric material, drying the dielectric material, and subjecting it to an elevated temperature to convert the hydroxide to oxide in situ. The concentration of the aqueous solution of the chloride may vary from 5 per cent to saturation and the conversion of hydroxide to oxide may be accomplished at about 175 degrees C.
