Abstract

888,639. Glass manufacture. SOLVAY ET CIE. March 9, 1960 [April 10,1959], No. 8258/60. Class 56. In order to maintain the water content of a glass making batch, based on sand and sodium carbonate, at a temperature below 35‹C., at a level of 5 to 30 litres per metric ton of batch, caustic soda and water are added to provide 0.01 to 2.22 kg. of caustic soda for every kg. of water in the liquid phase and, if required, water for monohydrating the sodium carbonate. Above 15‹C. the amount of caustic soda may be sufficient to prevent hydration of the carbonate. Sodium chloride may also be added. Data of quantities suitable for different temperatures are given. Specification 888,638 is referred to.
