Abstract
888,638. Glass manufacture. SOLVAY ET CIE. March 9, 1960 [April 2, 1959], No. 8257/60. Class 56. To maintain the moisture content of a glass making batch based on sand and sodium carbonate at a value that gives improved properties in storage and handling at and above 26‹C., there is added to every metric ton of batch at least 0.5 and preferably 1.0 to 5.5 kilogrammes of sodium chloride and also water in such quantity that the amount of water present exceeds that required to transform the sodium carbonate in the batch into sodium carbonate monohydrate, said excess being preferably 5 to 30 litres per metric ton. Preferably, for use at 33‹C., 30‹C. and 26‹C., respectively, the amounts of sodium chloride are 0.5, 1.3 and 1.8 kilogrammes respectively, the amounts for intermediate temperatures being calculated by interpolation.
