Abstract

To improve the mechanical properties of high percentage magnesium alloys the alloys are superheated one or more times to a temperature of at least 800 DEG C. Examples are given of treating magnesium alloys containing 3, 6 and 10 per cent of aluminium and a ternary alloy containing magnesium, 4 per cent aluminium and 3 per cent zinc. The duration of the superheating varies inversely for any given alloy with the temperature of superheat and is usually not less than 15 minutes and the minimum temperature of superheat varies with the nature of the alloy. Specification 219,287, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], is referred to.
