Abstract
Hydrated citric acid is obtained by effecting oversaturation of a solution of citric acid at a temperature not above 41 DEG C., so that the acid is crystallized out directly. The pressure is maintained at less than 1\ba1/4\be inches absolute, that is, the boiling point is less than 41 DEG C. The process may be carried out with impure solutions of the acid, but is not practicable if the ratio of acid to impurities is much less than 4 to 1. For example, with a solution containing 15 parts of acid to 1 of impurity, 50 per cent of the acid may be obtained in a first crystallization, and the mother liquor reworked until a total yield of 75 per cent is obtained. The remainder of the acid may be recovered as calcium citrate in known manner.
