Abstract

The invention comprises a crystalline non-hygroscopic product having the composition of a glyoxal hydrate of the formula 3(CHO.CHO).2H2O and its preparation by subjecting an aqueous solution of glyoxal, having a glyoxal content in excess of 30 per cent by weight, to a temperature of 35-45 DEG C. and thereafter allowing the desired product to crystallize in the solution at a temperature lower than that of the heating. The crystalline hydrate, which may be a tetrahydroxy naphthodioxane, on dissolution in water yields pure aqueous glyoxal solutions. In an example, a 60 per cent aqueous glyoxal solution containing some acetic acid, glyoxylic acid and glycollic acid as impurities, is maintained at 40 DEG C. for 4 days; it is then inoculated with some crystals of hydrate from a previous operation and maintained at 15-20 DEG C. until a paste of crystals has formed; the mixture is filtered and the mother liquor concentrated down for use in a further operation. U.S.A. Specification 2,379,555 is referred to.
