Abstract

A multistage process for the production of potassium sulphate or mixed crystals of potassium sulphate and ammonium sulphate comprises reacting ammonium sulphate with an aqueous liquor containing potassium chloride to yield an intermediate solid complex of potassium sulphate and ammonium sulphate, separating the complex from the mother liquor and reaching it with or without more ammonium sulphate, with an aqueous liquor to give a second intermediate solid complex which is richer in potassium sulphate than the first complex. The total quantity of ammonium sulphate used is in substantial excess over the total potassium chloride employed in all stages. In a cyclic form of the process, the complex produced in each stage (r) from the first to penultimate is reacted in the following stage (r + 1) with the mother liquor produced in the corresponding next following stage (r + 2) of a previous cycle, or with potassium chloride and water in the case of the final stage, the total potassium chloride and/or water being preferably divided up into portions which are added at each stage. Each stage may be carried out at the same temperature or the temperature may be diminished in successive stages starting from the stage employing pure ammonium sulphate. The excess of ammonium sulphate may be recovered by working up the liquor from the first stage. The liquor may be evaporated to deposit ammonium sulphate or potassium ammonium sulphate at elevated temperature and finally cooled to separate ammonium chloride and p leave a liquor of the same composition as, but less in quantity than, the original liquor from the first stage. According to the examples, (1) a three stage process at 30 DEG C. produces potassium sulphate with a 90 per cent yield; (2) a four stage process at 30 DEG C. produces potassium sulphate with a 94 per cent yield; (3) a three-stage process at temperature of 90 DEG C., 80 DEG C. and 30 DEG C. in succeeding stages produces potassium sulphate.
