329,389. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 18, 1929. Divided on 329,375. Benzoic acid; phthalic acid.-The methods of Specifications 307,343 and 329,375, according to which benzoic acid contaminated with naphthoquinones and phthalic anhydride is purified by reducing the naphthoquinones and hydrating the anhydride, the converted impurities being then leached out with water, are modified by omitting the reduction step, in the case where phthalic anhydride is the only impurity to be considered. The benzoic acid so obtained, or the alkalimetal benzoates prepared therefrom, may be further purified as described in Specification 329,375. Examples are given in which (1) benzoic acid containing phthalic anhydride but free from naphthoquinones is melted under dilute caustic soda solution; purified benzoic acid separates on cooling, and phthalic acid may be recovered from the mother liquor; (2) the impure benzoic acid is melted under an aqueous suspension of lime.
