Abstract
307,343. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. March 5, 1928, [Convention date]. Benzoic acid.-Benzoic acid prepared catalytically from phthalic acid or phthalic anhydride, or from naphthalene by way of phthalic anhydride, is purified by treating it with reducing agents in the presence of water, whereby the naphthoquinone impurities are reduced to naphthohydroquinones while the phthalic anhydride, if present, is hyarated; the product is then leached with water to remove the naphthohydroquinones and the phthalic acid. According to the example, crude, finely ground benzoic acid pasted with water is treated with sodium bisulphite at 40- 50‹ C., and after 3 to 4 hours the mass is acidified with hydrochloric acid, cooled, filtered, and washed with water; substantially pure benzoic acid is obtained. Sulphur dioxide may he used instead of sodium bisulphite. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the hydration of the phthalic anhydride may take place prior or subsequently to the reduction of the naphthoquinones. It states also that the product may be leached with aqueous solutions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
