Abstract

Calcium citrate is purified by treatment with sulphur dioxide in the presence of water, the resulting solution of calcium p bisulphite and citric acid being then boiled, after removing organic matter by filtration, to drive off the sulphur dioxide and re-form the calcium citrate. The precipitated calcium citrate is filtered off, washed, and again subjected to the preceding treatment until sufficiently pure, when it may be decomposed with sulphuric acid to produce citric acid. The sulphur dioxide driven off is available for the treatment of further calcium citrate. When the raw material consists of lime juice or lemon-juice, it is directly treated with calcium bisulphite, the subsequent treatment being as before.
