Abstract

293,504. James, R. W., (Merck & Co.). April 20, 1927. Disinfectants. -A disinfectant comprising iodine in a finely divided' or colloidal form is obtained by precipitating iodine'from solution at a low temperature in the presence of a comparatively small amount of a protective colloid. In the preferred form, iodine is dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution, the protective colloid (gum arabic, gelatine, or casein)' is added, suitably in the proportion of 2 per cent of the iodine, and the mixture is cooled and rapidly acidified, preferably with hydrochloric acid. The proportion of iodine in the reaction product should not exceed about 8 per cent, but the product when obtained, may be concentrated by allowing it to stand or by filtration through a Chamberland filter, and may be purified by repeated concentration (by filtration) and dilution. Specification 267,557 is referred to.
