Aug. 15, 1927. 2<1> : 4<1>-Dichlor-2-benzoylbenzoic acid; 2<1> : 4<1>- dichlor-5<1>-nitro-2-benzoylbenzoic acid; 2<1> : 4<1>-dichlor-5<1>-amino-2-benzoyl benzoic acid.-m-Dichlorbenzene is condensed with phthalic anhydride, the resulting 2<1> : 4<1>-dichlor-2-benzoylbenzoic acid is nitrated and then reduced and the 2<1> : 4<1> - dichlor - 5<1> - amino-2-benzoylbenzoic acid finally treated with a dehydrating agent in order to close the ring and produce 1-amino-2: 4-diclloranthraquinone. For the condensation of the m-dichlorbenzene and phthalic anhydride aluminium or ferric chloride may be used. The reduction of the 2<1> : 4<1>-dichlor-5<1>-nitro-2-benzoylbenzoic acid is preferably effected with iron and acetic acid but iron and hydrochloric acid, electrclytic hydrogen, or hydrogen and a catalyst may be employed. For the final ring closure sulphuric acid is used.
