Abstract
Alumina is purified by dissolution in sulphuric acid at the boiling temperature, followed by addition of aqueous hydrochloric acid and gaseous hydrogen chloride to the solution to precipitate hydrated aluminium chloride which is separated by filtration or centrifuging, washed with hydrochloric acid and calcined to produce pure alumina. As shown, the mother liquor from the separation is distilled and concentrated to provide recycle sulphuric acid and gaseous and aqueous hydrogen chloride for the precipitation and washing stages, respectively, and the gaseous and aqueous hydrogen chloride from the calcination are used for the precipitation and washing stages respectively the hydrochloric acid from the washing stages being used in the precipitation stage.
