Abstract

In the preparation of phenol by monosulphonating benzene and hydrolyzing the product with alkali, the sulphonated benzene is obtained by reacting benzene with approximately the theoretical amount of sulphur trioxide in the presence of liquid sulphur dioxide as a diluent. The benzene and sulphur trioxide are each dissolved in the sulphur dioxide and the solutions then run at approximately equal rates into a relatively large amount of liquid sulphur dioxide at atmospheric or higher pressure and at a temperature below the boiling point of sulphur dioxide under the pressure employed.
