Abstract

A sequestering composition consisting essentially of polyhydroxycarboxylic acids is manufactured from an aqueous solution of a starch hydrolysis product with a dextrose equivalent of 30 to 90 and comprising dextrose, disaccharides, trisaccharides, tetrasaccharides and higher polysaccharides of dextrose by carboxylating the aldehyde and ketone groups of the said saccharides by means of the cyanhydrin reaction followed by hydrolysis. The cyanhydrin reaction may be carried out with sodium cyanide and the hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide to produce the sodium salts of the polyhydroxy carboxylic acids. The sequestering composition may be added to aqueous alkaline solutions for bottle washing.ALSO:A washing composition, especially suited for the washing of bottles and similar glassware, comprises an aqueous solution containing up to 10% of caustic alkali and 1 to 20% based on the proportion of alkali of a sequestering composition, consisting essentially of polyhydroxycarboxylic acids or sodium salts thereof, obtained from a starch hydrolysis product with a dextrose equivalent of 30 to 90, by means of the cyanhydrin reaction followed by hydrolysis.
