Abstract

Alkali salts of organic carboxylic acids are prepared by the action of caustic alkalis on alcohols at a temperature above 300 DEG C. and under pressure greater than 100 atmospheres. The period of heating is not longer than 4 hours, and the alkali may be used in aqueous solution, particularly with alcohols of high molecular weight. The process may be made continuous. Examples are given of the production of sodium acetate from ethyl alcohol using both pure and aqueous sodium hydroxide, sodium propionate from propyl alcohol, sodium butyrate from butyl alcohol, potassium caprylate from octanol.
