Abstract

Reductic acid (2 : 3-dihydroxycyclopentene-2-one-1) is produced by hydrolysing a 3-halogen compound of cyclopentanedione-1 : 2-(3-halogen-2 - hydroxy - cyclopentene - 2 - one - 1), e.g. by means of a weakly alkaline substance, such as barium or calcium carbonate or by heating with water or water vapour at a temperature above 100 DEG C. As an intermediate step the 3-halogen atom may be replaced by an acetic acid residue before hydrolysis, e.g. by treating it with an alkali acetate in acetic acid, with or without the addition of acetic anhydride, followed by hydrolysis with methyl alcoholic hydrochloric acid. Detailed examples are given of the hydrolysis of 3-bromo- and 3-chlorocyclopentanedione-1 : 2.
