Abstract

A process for the preparation of glycerol comprising hypochlorination of alkyl alcohol in aqueous solution to produce aqueous glycerol chlorohydrins, hydrolysis of the aqueous glycerol chlorohydrins with sodium carbonate to produce aqueous glycerol, and separation of substantially anhydrous glycerol by vapourisation of water and separation of salt, is characterized by hydrolysing the glycerol chlorohydrins in an aqueous solution containing from 2 to 10% by weight of glycerol chlorohydrins and about 1.0 to 1.1 equivalents of sodium carbonate per mole of glycerol chlorohydrins by heating said solution containing glycerol chlorohydrins and sodium carbonate at a temperature of from 200 DEG C. to 240 DEG C. for 0.01 to 0.05 hours under autogenous pressure.
