Abstract
Hydrazine hydrate is prepared by reaction of an aqueous solution of di-hydrazine sulphate with an amount of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, or alkaline earth metal oxide, ranging between 100-150% of the amount stoichiometrically equivalent to the sulphate, followed by the addition of a water-soluble organic liquid in amount 20-500% of the total water present at 15-100 DEG C., separation of the resulting metal sulphate, and working up of the remaining solution by distillation. The use of sodium and potassium hydroxides in the form of 40-45% aqueous solutions and of calcium hydroxide or oxide is referred to. The organic liquid may be a readily volatile, aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methyl, ethyl, or propyl alcohols, and dioxane. Prior to separation of the metal sulphate, the reaction mixture may be cooled to 20-30 DEG C.
