Abstract
Light magnesium hydroxide in powder form is produced by mixing moist magnesium hydroxide precipitated from aqueous solution with a hydroxylic liquid, e.g. water and/or methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, &c., alcohol, mixture of alcohols or methylated spirits, heating the mixture to within say 50 DEG C. above or below the critical temperature, and reducing the pressure while avoiding a fall in temperature of more than 30 DEG C. The magnesium hydroxide employed may be obtained from solutions of magnesium salts and strong alkali or ammonia, or from sea water and lime or dolomitic lime. 10-30 parts hydroxylic liquid to one part magnesium hydroxide (reckoned on the dry material), are suitable. The process may be effected batch-wise, or the suspension may be pumped intermittently into a heated pressure vessel, and drawn intermittently into a second heated pressure vessel in which the pressure is released; alternatively, it may be pumped into a vessel or through a coil wherein it is heated to near the critical temperature, the pressure being maintained by regulated withdrawal into a vessel at atmospheric pressure and heated to a temperature near the critical temperature of the liquid.
