Class 123(1) Corrosion of ferrous metals in contact with aqueous solutions of caustic alkalies containing aliphatic, saturated polyhydroxy sequestering compounds such as sorbitol, gluconic acid, glueoheptonic acid, saccharic acid or mucic acid or salts of said acids is inhibited by the addition to the solutions of boric acid, the water-soluble salts thereof or boron compounds capable of hydrolysing in alkaline solutions to yield watersoluble salts of boric acid. The amounts of alkali and sequestering agent per 100 ml. of solution may vary from 0À25 to 20 grams and 0À002 to 5 grams respectively; from 0À1 to 3, preferably from 0À5 to 1À5, parts by weight of the borate inhibitor are added for each part by weight of sequestering agent in the final solution.
