Abstract

A sequestering agent comprises a mixture of a water-soluble organic polyhydroxy compound having at least four carbon atoms and at least two vicinal hydroxyl groups per molecule and boric acid or a water-soluble borate. Polyhydroxycarboxylic acids, such as gluconic acid, or a water soluble salt thereof or gluconic lactone, arabinic, galactic, saccharic, mucic, glucuronic, glucoheptonic, ketogluconic and tartaric acids may be used or they may be replaced partly or entirely by aldohexoses, hexitols, pentoses or tetroses. In one method, a mixture of sodium gluconate and an excess of boric acid is prepared and then mixed with a polyhydroxy compound such as glucose. In examples, a technical solution of sodium gluconate is heated with borax or boric acid until all had dissolved.ALSO:A rinsing preparation, for use in bottle washing, comprises a solution of an alkylarylsulphonate and a sequestering agent comprising a mixture of a water-soluble organic polyhydroxy compound having at least four carbon atoms and at least two vicinal hydroxyl groups per molecule and boric acid or a water-soluble borate such as borax. Preferred polyhydroxy compounds are polyhydroxycarboxylic acids, such as gluconic acid, or a water-soluble salt thereof, or gluconic lactone, and/or aldohexoses, hexitols, pentoses or tetroses.ALSO:The formation of a precipitate containing polyvalent metal ions in an aqueous liquid containing such ions is inhibited by adding a sequestering agent comprising a mixture of a water-soluble organic polyhydroxy compound having at least four carbon atoms and at least two vicinal hydroxyl groups per molecule and boric acid or a water soluble borate. Polyhydroxycarboxylic acids, such as gluconic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof, or gluconic lactone, give best results but these may be replaced partly or entirely by aldohexoses, hexitols, pentoses or tetroses. The sequestering agent may comprise from 1/2 to 4 mols of the polyhydroxy compound per mol of boric acid or borate. An aqueous solution of the sequestering agent has a sequestering action on Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Al and Cr ions. The agents are particularly useful for softening water.
