Abstract

a - Phenylethylene - b - halohydrins are prepared by treating a - phenylethylene - a b - dihalides with an alkaline compound other than an alkali hydroxide. The equivalent quantity of the base is preferably employed, otherwise phenylglycol is formed. According to the examples, (1) a - phenylethylene - b - chlorhydrin is obtained from a - phenylethylene - a b -dichloride using calcium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium acetate as the alkaline compound, (2) a -phenylethylene-b -bromhydrin is prepared from a -phenylethylene-a b -dibromide by treatment with calcium carbonate. In each of the examples water is present and the reactants are heated to a temperature near its boiling point. Specification 9680/08, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.], is referred to.
