Abstract

Red ferric oxide is prepared by oxidizing a mixture of nearly equivalent quantities of ferrous salt and alkali to form colloidal seed particles, and effecting the growth of ferric oxide thereon until the particles reach the desired colour. The proportion of alkali should be 0.9 to 1.1 times the equivalent of the iron salt. The precipitated slurry is continuously oxidized by blowing air through it, the slurry is heated to 50 DEG to 100 DEG C. and ferric oxide is precipated on the seed particles either by further additions of alkali and iron salt or by adding metallic iron in the presence of a small amount of iron salt as catalyst. The product progressively darkens and the oxidation process is continued, e.g. from 1 to 7 days until the desired shade is obtained. The precipitate is filtered, washed, dried and disintegrated and may be further darkened by heating at about 1150 DEG F. The alkali is preferably added to the iron salt as it yields a slurry of lower viscosity. U.S.A. Specification 2,574,459 is referred to.
