Abstract

337,410. Dreyfus, H. July 24, 1929. Oxygenated organic compounds such as ethanol, acetic acid, acetaldehyde and their homologues and ketones are produced by contacting methane with steam at a temperature of 200‹-500‹ C., and preferably up to 500 atmospheres pressure or more. The nature of the products may be varied by admixture of the reacting gases with carbon monoxide or dioxide, oxygen or hydrogen. Inert gases such as nitrogen may also be added. The following catalysts may be used :-zinc, magnesium, calcium, aluminium, chromium, manganese, vanadium, molybdenum, titanium, iron, cobalt, nickel, and rare earths, either in the metallic state, but preferably as oxides or as other compounds, such as arsenic or sulphur compounds, or as phosphates, silicates or borates. Mixtures with alkali or alkaline earth compounds, or with one another, or with copper, silver, or gold, may be employed, for instance, zinc chromate, manganese chromate, zinc vanadate, tungstate or molybdate, or the corresponding salts of metals such as magnesium, calcium or aluminium. Catalysts of Specification 337,014, namely mixtures comprising ferrites, ferrates, cobaltites, or cobaltates, especially of alkali or alkaline earth metals, or of Specification 337,409, namely, iron, nickel, or cobalt borates, silicates or phosphates' may also be used. Apparatus of copper or its alloys, or steel lined therewith, or steel containing vanadium, manganese, nickel or cobalt may be employed.
