Oxygenated organic compounds; methanol. - The catalytic manufacture of oxygenated carbon compounds, for example by the interaction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen or with steam or by the dehydrogenation of 'organic compounds such as ethyl alcohol, is effected with catalysts that have been prepared by heating to decomposition a double chromate of a nitrogenous base and one of the metals zinc, copper, cadmium, magnesium, manganese, silver, and iron; mixtures of or containing such double chromates may also be employed. The activity of the catalysts may be improved by leaching the decomposition product with a weak acid, such as 5-10 per cent acetic acid. According to the examples, methanol and higher alcohols are prepared by passing carbon monoxide and hydrogen over catalysts prepared from basic zinc ammonium chromate, zinc bichromate tetrapyridine, and manganese ammonium chromate. Zinc bichromate trianiline is also mentioned as a suitable material from which a catalyst may be prepared. Zinc bichromate tetrapyridine is prepared by adding pyridine in excess to a boiling solution of zinc bichromate.
