Methanol and other oxygenated organic compounds.-The manufacture of methanol and other oxygenated organic compounds from carbon monoxide and hydrogen is effected with catalysts prepared by treatment at a temperature above 600‹ C. of mixtures or compounds containing hexavalent chromium and one or more of the metals zinc, copper, cadmium, magnesium, manganese, silver, and iron. The catalysts may be prepared by igniting a chromate or bichromate of one or more of the metals specified at a temperature of 600-1000‹ C., or by prolonged heating to bright redness of mixtures of oxides of the metals specified or their salts such as chlorides with alkali chromates or bichromates. Preferably the product is washed with a weak acid such as dilute acetic acid to remove all compounds not in the form of chromite, and the porous material then dried. According to the example, basic zinc chromate is heated for four hours to a temperature of 800-900‹ C., washed with dilute acetic acid and dried. The yield of methanol under stated reaction conditions is given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the catalysts may be prepared by igniting at red heat a double chromate or bichromate of a metal with ammonia or an organic base such as pyridine or aniline. In examples, (1) basic zinc ammonium chromate or zinc bichromate tetrapyridine (prepared by adding pyridine in excess to a boiling solution of zinc bichromate) is gently heated to start a spontaneous decomposition, leaving zinc chromite, and (2) manganese ammonium chromate is heated to the point of decomposition. The yield of methanol and higher alcohols under stated reaction conditions is given for each of the catalysts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
