Abstract
296,049. Soc. Chimique de la Grande- Paroisse Azote et Produits Chimiques. Aug. 24, 1827, [Convention date]. Alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, ethers, esters, and other oxygen-containing compounds of the lower hydrocaxbons of the aliphatic series are obtained by the reaction of carbon monoxide or a gas containing it, on water in the presence of a single-phase catalyst containing one of the 'elements aluminium, <3,ilicon, cerium, titanium,- zirconium and thorium, being elements of the third and fourth groups series a., and one of the elements potassium, sodium, magnesium, va.nadium, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, mercury, lead, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, the conditions being such as to avoid the production of hydrogen as far as possible. The elements of the' catalyst may be in the free state or in the form of oxides, hydrates or salts, e.g. carbonates, formates, oxalates, borates, nitrates, phosphates. The catalysts are prepared by mixing the metals or suita.ble compounds thereof and heating in known manner and are heated preparatory to use in a current of the reaction gases, in hydrogen, in carbon monoxide, in steam, in carbon dioxide and nitrogen, or in a current of one ³f the products of reaction such as formic acid. The temp, eratunes employed lie between ordinary temperature and 530‹ C. and the pressures between normal and 600 atmospheres. The walls of the reaction vessels may be made of chrome, silicon or manganese steels or of copper or silver. One, or more of the products of the. reaction may be introduced with the reacting materials, especially v where it is desired to obtain higher homologues of a series. Examples describe (1) the production of formic acid using as catalyst thorium oxide and potassium carbonate; (2) the production of alcohols and other organic compounds using as catalyst a precipitate obtained by treating a, solution in hydrochloric acid of antimonious oxide and thorium nitrate with ammonium carbonate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the production of oxygen-containing organic compounds by the reaction of carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a catalyst containing at least one element of the scries potassium, sodium, magnesium, vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, mercury, lead, arsenic, antimony, bismuth in association with at least one, element of the' series beryllium, magnesium, aluminium, cerium, silicon, titamum, zirconium, thorium, uranium, lithium, calcium, strontium, barium, tungsten, Examples are described relating to the production of alcohols, using as catalyst a mixture! of manganese' carbonate, magnesia and alumina; ethers, using as catalyst a mixture of copper, thorium and bismuth compounds precipitated on pumice; alcohols, using as catalyst manganese oxide, magnesium oxide and aluminium oxide; alcohols, using as catalyst a preeil)itate obtained by treating a solution of lead nitrate and strontium nitrate with ammonium carbonate; lower members of the aliphatic alcohols and acids, using a. catalyst containing thorium and cobalt. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference' has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 27963/13, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], and 180,016,
