Abstract

Unsaturated carboxylic acids or alkali salts thereof are made by oxidation of the corresponding aldehyde, by a process which comprises oxidizing an unsaturated aldehyde in an aqueous emulsion with nickel peroxide in the presence of a dilute alkali metal hydroxide solution and, if desired or required, acidifying the resulting alkaline solution, whereby the unsaturated carboxylic acid is set free. The starting material may be a mono- or a polyunsaturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic aldehyde containing 4 to 20 carbon atoms, preferably sorbic aldehyde. The most preferred reaction temperature is from 30 DEG C. to 50 DEG C. The detailed examples describe the oxidation of sorbic aldehyde and crotonic aldehyde to the corresponding carboxylic acids.
