Abstract
Vinyl esters of carboxylic acids e.g. vinyl acetate, are prepared by reacting ethylene, oxygen and the appropriate carboxylic acid in the presence of a catalyst comprising a salt of palladium, rhodium, or platinum and a salt of copper, zinc, mercury, lead, chromium, manganese, iron, nickel or cobalt. Optionally a salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal may be included in the catalyst as a promotor. Halides or salts of carboxylic acids of the metals are preferred and oxides which may be converted in situ into salts may be used. Pure oxygen, or air may be used and anhydrous carboxylic acids are preferred as is the addition of dehydrating agents such as acetic anhydride to maintain anhydrous conditions. Examples describe the preparation of vinyl acetate, butyrate, crotonate, stearate and benzoate.
