Abstract
Nickel hydroxide in aqueous suspension is reduced to nickel by treatment under suitable conditions with a gas comprising hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide, whereafter the nickel is converted to nickel carbonyl by treatment under suitable conditions with carbon monoxide. Temperatures of 120-220 DEG C., and pressures of 5-200 atmos. are specified for the reduction, and temperatures of 20-160 DEG C., and pressures of 10-200 atmos. are specified for the carbonylation. A 15 per cent nickel suspension may be carbonylated. Reduction may take place in the presence of sodium, or barium sulphide, or carbon disulphide as catalyst. The mol. ratio of sulphide to nickel hydroxide may be 0.01-0.14. The nickel may be carbonylated in the aqueous suspension or may be removed therefrom before carbonylation by filtration or centrifugation. Reduction and carbonylation may be effected in the same or different reactors, and the process may be continuous or batchwise. The nickel hydroxide may be produced from any organic or inorganic salt of nickel, e.g. nickel chloride, and any alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium hydroxide.ALSO:Nickel hydroxide in aqueous suspension is reduced to nickel by treatment under suitable conditions with a gas comprising hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide, whereafter the nickel is converted to nickel carbonyl by treatment under suitable conditions with carbon monoxide.
