Abstract
1339999 Alkali metal carbonates KALICHEMIE AG 30 Nov 1971 [8 Dec 1970 27 Aug 1971] 55542/71 Heading C1A Alkali metal carbonates are produced by adding a 10 to 75% by weight aqueous solution of the alkali metal hydroxide to a recirculating aqueous solution of the hydroxide and carbonate and the resultant solution is finely dispersed in a CO 2 containing gas at a temperature between 150 and 700‹ C. for a reaction time of 0À1 to 10 seconds whereafter the liquid and gas are separated and then the product crystals are separated from the solution. To isolate the crystals a branch stream of the liquor containing the crystals may be withdrawn and filtered, the filtrate being recombined with the main liquor stream. For the production of Na 2 CO 3 the recirculated solution preferably contains 13 to 18% by weight of Na 2 CO 3 and 8 to 14% by weight of NaOH and in the production of K 2 CO 3 the preferred concentrations are 35 to 52% by weight of K 2 CO 3 and 8 to 20% by weight of KOH. When the K 2 CO 3 concentration is >45% by weight K 2 CO 3 .1À5 H 2 O is formed while if the concentration is <45% K 2 CO 3 crystals are formed. The alkali metal carbonate crystals produced may be dried with a CO 2 containing gas to convert any hydroxide to the carbonate.
