Abstract

Palladium metal is obtained from palladium salts of a condensed phosphoric acid by reduction with hydrogen in aqueous suspension.ALSO:Palladium salts of a condensed phosphoric acid having a polymerization number of from 2-14 are prepared by heating a halide, nitrate or sulphate of palladium and the condensed phosphoric acid or a precursor thereof, for example ammonium salts or hydrated monomeric acids such as orthophosphoric acid. The salts may be reduced to palladium suitable for use as a catalyst with hydrogen in aqueous suspension. The salts may be used as catalyst in a process for producing hydrogen peroxide by contacting hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of liquid water. The salts may be in colloidal form or in comminuted form and the reaction is preferably carried out in acid medium. An oxygen-containing organic compound may be present, e.g. an alcohol, aldehyde, ketone, ether, ester, amide an oxygen-containing amine or carboxylic acid. A hydrogen peroxide stabilizer as defined in Specification 1,056,121, may be present and the temperature and pressure conditions are described in Specification 1,041,045. The hydrogen peroxide may be used directly for an oxidation process or the catalyst may be separated and the resulting solution evaporated.
