1450897 Carboxylic acid salts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 Nov 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 53495/72 Heading C2C Alkali metal salts of carboxylic acids are prepared in a batch process by reacting an alcohol with an aqueous solution of caustic alkali at elevated temperature and adding water during the reaction. Alcohols with 11 or more carbon atoms, e.g. 12-15 C prepared by hydroformylating the appropriate olefine to form aldehydes followed by hydrogenation are used. A temperature above 235‹ C. is used and the aqueous caustic alkali may be added during the heating and unreacted alcohol separated from the mixture by steam distillation.
