Abstract

A process for the manufacture of terephthalic acid comprises oxidizing at elevated temperatures a para-di (secondary alkyl) benzene with nitric acid in the presence of vanadium which may be present in any form, e.g. ammonium vanadate or vanadium pentoxide. Metallic copper or a copper compound may also be present. Preferably the total number of carbon atoms in the secondary alkyl radicals in the starting material should not exceed 8. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously, e.g. by feeding the reactants to a tubular vessel or to a series of cascade vessels. In examples, a mixture of terephthalic acid and para isopropyl benzoic acid is obtained by heating under reflux para-di-isopropyl benzene with dilute nitric acid with and without ammonium vanadate present (1) and (3); in similar processes ammonium vanadate and vanadium chloride and for comparison copper, ammonium molybdate, cobalt nitrate, sodium dichromate, mercuric chloride and ferrous sulphate are employed (2); terephthalic acid is obtained by heating para-di-isopropyl benzene in an autoclave with dilute nitric acid and ammonium meta vanadate with and without copper (4) and (5); and similar processes are carried out using ammonium vanadate and copper separately and copper-ammonium vanadate and coppervanadium pentoxide mixtures (6). Terephthalic acid may be separated from unoxidized secondary alkyl benzoic acid by recrystallizing the product at elevated pressures and temperatures from organic solvents or water.
