Abstract
In a process for the production of 3-alkylphenols a 2,4-, 2,6-dialkylphenol or a 2,4,6-trialkylphenol is heated with an activating bleaching earth to a temperature above 150 DEG C. preferably to 170-190 DEG C., the reaction being preferably carried out in the presence of phenol. In an example equal quantities of phenol and 2,4,6-tritertiary butylphenol are heated with a Montmorillonite catalyst for six hours at 175 DEG to produce 3-tertiarybutylphenol. Examples are given starting with 2,4- or 2,6-ditertiarybutylphenol to produce 3-tertiarybutylphenol.
