Abstract

Alkali metal terephthalates are produced by passing a mixture heated to 200-320 DEG C. of an alkali metal benzene carboxylate and a known catalyst through a reaction zone whose free space is practically completely filled with reaction mixture, heating the latter to 340-550 DEG C., continually moving it by means of shearing forces and discharging it, if necessary through an air lock, after a residence period of 5-60 minutes. The product may be thereafter kept in a retention vessel for 10 minutes-5 hours at 380-450 DEG C. and then discharged e.g. through an air lock.
