Abstract

Terphenyls are obtained by pyrolysing a vaporous mixture containing diphenyl and benzene at 600-900 DEG C. for 5-60 seconds, the amount of diphenyl being such that it is neither consumed nor produced in the process. Preferably the temperature at the entrance to the pyrolysis zone is 450-750 DEG C. and at the exit 750-900 DEG C. The diphenyl may form 10-35% by weight of the feed mixture.
