Abstract

Odourless or weakly odourous hydrocarbon mixtures are prepared by a process which comprises the steps of catalytic hydrogenative refining followed by chemical treatment in the liquid phase with an aqueous solution that contains at least one permanganate and/or at least one dichromate and/or at least one chromate, and may also contain up to 3% by weight of free alkali metal hydroxide. Preferred temperatures are 10-30 DEG C., with treatment times of 1-3 hours. If the hydrocarbon mixture is of relatively wide boiling range it may first be catalytically hydrogenatively refined, and then split up by distillation into narrower boiling range fractions, at least one of said fractions being subsequently chemically treated, or alternatively the distillation may be effected after the chemical treatment.
