Abstract

1440528 Sulphur dioxide; sulphuric acid DAVY POWERGAS GmbH 12 Sept 1973 [14 Sept 1972] 42826/73 Heading C1A Sulphur is burnt to sulphur dioxide in a furnace part or all of the oxygen required for combustion being provided by injection of sulphur trioxide, thus reducing the temperature of combustion and increasing the sulphur dioxide content of the resulting gas. Preferably 40-95% of the amount of oxygen required may be in the form of SO 3 . When part of the required oxygen is provided by SO 3 , the remainder may be pure oxygen or oxygen enriched air. The SO 3 may be provided from a contact plant or by stripping SO 3 from oleum which itself may be produced by solution of contact gases obtained from the SO 2 in sulphuric acid. If desired, a spray of liquid S03 may be used. The combustion temperature may be lowered to about 800‹ C.
