Abstract
Nitroparaffins are prepd. in gaseous phase by nitration of butane or propane by pure nitrogen peroxide at 180-320 degrees C pref. 200-240 degrees C where the reaction mixt. contains 8-20 vol.% pref. 10% peroxide and 80-92 vol.% propane. 5-15 vol.% oxygen may be present as catalyst. By-product No is converted to the peroxide for recycling. The reduction in temp. from above 350 degrees C when using HNO3 reduces the formation of nitriles resulting in higher yields.
