Abstract

Carbon tetrachloride is prepared by heating phosgene at 200-600 DEG C. in the presence of a transition metal of Group V-VIII or a chloride, oxychloride or complex chloride thereof, on carbon as carrier. The phosgene may be used in admixture with other gases, such as nitrogen, carbon monoxide or chlorine, or may be formed in situ by using a mixture of carbon monoxide and chlorine. The catalyst may be used in the fluidised state. Specified catalysts are Ni, Co, V, Mo, Mn, W, Fe and Nb and their chlorides, oxychlorides and complex chlorides and mixtures thereof such as MoCl5, vanadium and molybdenum oxychlorides and potassium manganese chlorides K2MnCl4 (see Group III).ALSO:Catalysts for the conversion of phosgene to carbon tetrachloride (see Group IV(b)) consist of a transition metal of Groups V to VIII of the Periodic Table, or a chloride, oxychloride or complex chloride thereof or mixtures thereof, on carbon as carrier. Specified catalysts are Ni, Co, V, Mo, Mn, W, Fe and Nb and mixtures thereof and their chlorides, oxychlorides and complex chlorides, such as MoCl5, vanadium and molybdenum oxychloride and potassium manganese chloride, K2MnCl4. The carbon is advantageously active carbon or graphite. In examples the active catalyst is iron, tungsten, or molybdenum chloride.
