Abstract
Carbon black is modified by treatment with superheated steam in the proportion of at least one part steam to one part black at a temperature of 150-340 DEG C., preferably 220-340 DEG C. The proportion of steam to black is generally 1-5:1, and preferably 2:1. The superheated steam may contain up to 40 per cent, preferably 25-30 per cent, of air. Up to 1 per cent of a catalyst, e.g. ammonia, hydrogen chloride, or chlorine, may be present. The black may be treated in an externally heated rotary tube or in a fluidized bed. The black may be treated in the form of compressed beads. The product may be treated with an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or hydrogen, preferably after cooling. The volatile content of the product may be 2-20 per cent. The empyreumatic content may be reduced practically to zero.
