Abstract

Substituted formamides are prepared by reacting a primary or secondary amine with carbon monoxide at temperatures above 100 DEG C. and pressures above 50 atmospheres in the presence of water as sole catalyst. If the amine is insoluble or substantially insoluble in water, a water-miscible liquid solvent may be added. Preferably the water-content is at least 5% by weight of the amine. Specified and exemplified amines are dimethylamine, isohexylamine and piperidine.
