Abstract
Acetic acid is dehydrated by forming nitrosyl sulphuric acid therein, for example by treating the acid with sulphur dioxide or trioxide and a suitable oxide of nitrogen. As the oxide of nitrogen, nitric peroxide can be used, but it may be replaced by a mixture of nitric oxide and oxygen, or by concentrated nitric acid. The sulphur dioxide may be developed in the solution from salts such as water soluble sulphites or bisulphites, or from organic sulphites such as ethyl sulphite. The acetic acid may be separated by distillation, preferably under reduced pressure, from the gases dissolved therein and from the sulphuric acid formed, or it may be used without separation of the gases or sulphuric acid in acetylation processes, for example, in the acetylation of cellulose. Cellulose (containing approximately 8 per cent of moisture) is treated with acetic acid, and nitric peroxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen are introduced into the mass until the water is removed and crystals of nitrosyl sulphuric acid are formed. The pretreated cellulose may then be acetylated, with or without the removal of the oxides of nitrogen and sulphur dioxide, since these gases together act as catalysts for the reaction.
