Abstract
Water-soluble colloidal products are obtained by condensing urea with formaldehyde in the presence of water-soluble ethers of cellulose or other highly polymeric carbohydrate in aqueous solution while stirring. Glyoxal may be used in place of formaldehyde and, instead of mixtures, water-soluble lower condensation products may be employed. Specified water-soluble ethers are methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, oxyethylmethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose glycollic acid and ethyllichenine carboxylic acid. Urea may be replaced by a derivative or substitution product, e.g. thiourea, phenylated or acetylated urea. Filling-materials, e.g. sugar, may be present. Preferably 1,5-2,5 mols of urea are condensed with 1 mol of formaldehyde. The products may be used as adhesives or binding-agents; thickening, impregnating and dressing agents; and as additions to soaps and washing agents. Examples are given of the condensation of urea and formaldehyde in the presence of oxyethylmethyl cellulose and ethyllichenine carboxylic acid, and of urea and glyoxal in the presence of oxyethyl methyl cellulose. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of a product made by condensing urea and formaldehyde in the presence of oxyethyl starch.
