Abstract
513,996. Cellulose ethers. GROVES, W. W. (Kalle & Co., Akt.-Ges.). April 23, 1938, No. 12232. [Class 2 (ii)] A water-insoluble alkali-soluble methyl cellulose or hydroxyalkyl cellulose is dissolved in dilute caustic soda solution of 5 per cent. strength or less, and reacted with so much of a hydroxyalkylating agent that a water-soluble product is obtained. The concentration of the water-insoluble cellulose ether in the caustic soda solution is preferably greater than 3 per cent., e.g. 8-10 per cent. By using 0.5-2.0 mols. of a hydroxyalkylating agent, products are obtained whose aqueous solutions are stable to boiling. In an example : (1) methyl cellulose containing 12 per cent. of methoxyl is dissolved in caustic soda lye of 2 per cent. strength and treated with ethylene oxide. The product is neutralized with acetic acid and precipitated and washed with alcohol. (2) Methyl cellulose containing 11.5 per cent. of methoxyl is. dissolved in 1 per cent. caustic soda lye with cooling, and then treated with ethylene oxide. (3) Methyl cellulose having 17 per cent. of methoxyl is dissolved in soda lye, treated with ethylene oxide, and the solution neutralized, evaporated and extracted with alcohol. (4) Alkali cellulose is treated with 5 per cent. of its weight of ethylene oxide and the product neutralized, filtered, washed and dried. It is then dissolved in caustic soda lye, treated with ethylene oxide, neutralized, precipitated and washed with alcohol.
