Abstract

Cellulose ethers are manufactured by treating cellulose or its derivatives, in the presence of alkali with olefine sulphonic acids. In examples: (1) sulphite or other cellulose is immersed in soda lye and the sodium cellulose kneaded with sodium ethenesulphonate and further soda lye. The sodium celluloseethylethersulphonate is worked up by mixing the pressed mass with water, neutralizing with hydrochloric acid and adding methanol. The cellulose ether, which is precipitated is filtered, washed with methanol and dried; (2) cellulose is etherified with ethylene oxide, e.g. according to the process described in Specification 275,660, [Class 2 (ii)], and is reacted with sodium ethenesulphonate in the presence of soda lye; (3) methyl cellulose is reacted with potassium ethenesulphonate in the presence of soda lye. The product, particularly in admixture with moistening agents may be used as a substitute for tragacanth, e.g. as an emulsifying, washing, thickening, finishing and sizing agent. According to the Provisional Specification, alkali compounds of carbohydrates, including starch, may be reacted with salts of olefinic sulphonic acids.ALSO:Cellulose ethers suitable for use as emulsifying agents, especially in conjunction with moistening agents are prepared by treating cellulose or its derivatives with olefine sulphonic acids in the presence of alkali.
