Abstract

Washing flakes or powders are produced by treating a major proportion of an oily liquid soapless detergent in an aqueous medium with a minor proportion of a water-soluble cellulose ether so as to form a jelly, drying the jelly to form a sheet and mechanically breaking up the sheet. The jelly is preferably produced by adding the water-soluble cellulose ether to an aqueous solution of the oily liquid soapless detergent. The jelly converted into sheet form may be broken up on a soap flaking machine. The oily-liquid soapless detergent is preferably an ethylene oxide condensation product of an alkyl phenol. The water-soluble cellulose ethers specified comprise a water-soluble methyl ethyl ether of cellulose, a water-soluble methyl ether of cellulose, a water-soluble methyl hydroxy-ethyl ether of cellulose, a water-soluble hydroxy-ethyl ether of cellulose, and a water-soluble alkali metal salt of a carboxymethyl cellulose. Preferably the water-soluble cellulose ether is a water-soluble methyl ethyl cellulose containing between 0.3 and 0.5 methyl groups and 0.8 and 1.0 ethyl groups per glucose unit of cellulose and having a viscosity of about 10 centipoises in 1 per cent solution in water at 20 DEG C. If the water-soluble alkali metal salt of a carboxymethyl cellulose is used, it is preferably a water-soluble sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose having between 0.3 and 0.5 sodium carboxymethyl groups per glucose unit of cellulose and a viscosity of about 30-50 centipoises in a 1 ped cent solution in water at 20 DEG C. The flakes or powders can be diluted with alkalies or with inorganic solid ingredients of the kind usually included in washing powders Specification 645,752 is referred to.
