Abstract

Aqueous detergent compositions comprise by weight (1) 7-15% of at least one nonionic detergent, (2) 20-30% potassium pyrophosphate (3) 1.5-3% of an alkali metal salt of either an interpolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride (specific viscosity as a 1% solution in butanone-2 of 0.8-3.5), or a linear copolymer of ethylene and maleic anhydride (specific viscosity as a 1% solution in dimethyl formamide at 25 DEG C. of 1.2-1.8), (4) 2-3% of an alkali metal, preferably the potassium, salt of caprylic acid (5) water making up the balance. Nonionic detergents specified are the condensate of 1 mol. of dodecylphenol or 1 mol. of tridecyl alcohol with an average of ten mols. of ethylene oxide, the condensate of 1 mol. of nonylphenol with an average of nine or ten mols. of ethylene oxide, and polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene ethanols having the formula HO-(C2H4O)a(C3H6O)b (C2H4O)cH where b is an integer from 26 to 30 and a plus c is an integer such that the molecule contains 0-10% or 10-20% or 40-50% ethylene oxide. The composition may also contain about 3% of alkali metal silicates, about 2% of alkali metal, preferably sodium, xylene sulphonates, fluorescent dyes, colourants, perfumes and soil suspending agents e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Components (3) and (4) may be formed in situ by adding the polymer and/or caprylic acid respectively to the mixture followed by alkali.
